The La Kretz Research Center utilizes the facilities at Sedgwick Reserve, a 6,000 acre natural reserve that is part of the University of California’s Natural Reserve System. Download the Sedgwick Reserve Roads and Trails map here. Sedgwick includes a 10-acre field station with excellent facilities for researchers, educators, and students alike.
Use of the Reserve is managed through the UC NRS Reserve Access Management System (RAMS). Requests to visit Sedgwick for La Kretz activities should be submitted through the “Sedgwick Reserve” option on RAMS. Please contact Reserve Staff to inquire about visiting Sedgwick as part of your research activities. All use of Sedgwick Reserve assets requires advance approval via RAMS.
Day Use Facilities
La Kretz Research Center Office
The newly opened La Kretz Research Center Office provides meeting space for groups of 6 or fewer, as well as desk and counter space for researchers while they are on the reserve.
Tipton Meeting House
The LEED-certified Tipton Meeting House is an excellent facility for large events such as symposia, conferences, or board meetings related to activities of the La Kretz Research Center. Capacity is 75 persons.
Studio Classroom
The Studio Classroom includes ample workspace for processing samples, doing small-group activities, or convening a group of 10-30 people. The Classroom includes full A/V capabilities.
Overnight Use Facilities
Sedgwick Ranch House meeting space
The living and dining rooms at the Ranch House provide excellent accommodations for small groups (3-8 persons) seeking a space to facilitate working groups, writing retreats, or research collaborations. The Ranch House meeting space includes full A/V capabilities
A National Historic Landmark that underwent significant renovations and modernizations in 2017, the Sedgwick Ranch House was the original residence of the Sedgwick family during their years at the property. The Ranch House sleeps 9 total:
- Room 1: 3 beds
- Room 2: 2 beds
- Room 3: 3 beds
- Room 4 (the Master Bedroom): 1 bed
Sedgwick Bunkhouse
The bunkhouse was completed in Fall 2020 and includes 2 bedrooms, a modern kitchen and bathroom.
Tent Cabins
Four tent cabins, sleeping four each, are available for overnight use. Each tent cabin includes four twin “camp beds”, two desks, and two chairs. A freestanding shower house adjacent to the tent cabins includes two showers and two bathrooms. Please note, large groups interested in renting the tent cabins will need to include Tipton Meeting House Kitchen in their reservation–the tent cabins do not include a kitchen sufficient for large groups. (A limited outdoor kitchen including a small propane burner, sink, and fridge is available for small groups or individuals).
Standard Tent Camping
Space is available for approved visitors to pitch their own tents. The showerhouse associated with the tent cabins is available for campers to use. A limited outdoor kitchen including a small propane burner, sink, and fridge is available for small groups or individuals
